Does this sound familiar? Two play worlds sit side by side on the floor: a wooden railway with its wooden tracks, and a pile of Duplo bricks next to it. Your child looks from one to the other and asks: “Dad, can’t they play together?”
The answer is yes – and it’s easier than you think. With the right Duplo connector you can build bridges from Duplo bricks in just a few minutes for your wooden train to cross. Two play worlds that previously had nothing to do with each other become one.
Why don’t wooden railways and Duplo fit together directly?
Wooden railway tracks – whether from BRIO, Eichhorn, IKEA or Magic Bahn – and Duplo bricks were developed by different companies and use completely different connection systems.
Wooden tracks connect using a peg-and-socket system made from wood or plastic. Duplo bricks connect using studs that click together. The two cannot be joined without an adapter. This is where the Duplo connector for wooden railways comes in.
What is a Duplo connector – and how does it work?
A Duplo connector (also called a Duplo adapter or Duplo wooden railway adapter) is a small plastic piece with two functional sides:
How the connector is built
- Bottom: An opening that fits onto Duplo studs – the connector sits firmly on the Duplo brick without glue.
- Top: A groove or support surface that holds the wooden track.
The idea is simple: stack Duplo bricks into a pillar, place the connector on top and lay the wooden track in the groove – your bridge is ready. The train runs on tracks supported by Duplo bricks. No glue, no tools, and you can rebuild it at any time.
What you need
Materials for a simple bridge
- Your wooden railway – all brands with a 4,5 cm track gauge: BRIO, Eichhorn, IKEA LILLABO, Hape, Lidl Playtive, Magic Bahn
- Duplo bricks – standard studded bricks, at least 8 pieces (4 for each side of the bridge). A Duplo baseplate is recommended as a foundation.
- Duplo connectors – available in different versions to suit your build: straight, curved or inclined
Step by step: build your first Duplo bridge
Choose the bridge height
The standard height for wooden railway bridges is 75 mm – exactly the height of 4 stacked standard Duplo bricks. Build a Duplo tower of 4 bricks on each side of your planned bridge.
Attach the Duplo connector
Place the Magic Bahn Duplo connector on the top brick of the Duplo tower. The connector clicks onto the studs and stays firmly in place – without glue.
Lay the wooden track
Place the wooden track in the connector’s upper groove. Use the straight connector for straight tracks and the curved adapter for curves. The track rests on the connector – enough to create a stable bridge that you can rebuild at any time.
Build transitions to the ground-level track
The track needs to return to ground level immediately before and after the bridge. Use ramp tracks or incline adapters to create a smooth transition and prevent the train from derailing.
Test and adjust
Let a train cross the bridge slowly. Heavier trains with several carriages sometimes need wider Duplo foundations (2×2 rather than 2×1 bricks) for greater stability.
Which wooden railways are compatible?
Almost all wooden railways sold in Germany use the international standard with a 4,5 cm track gauge:
| Brand | Compatible with Duplo connectors |
|---|---|
| BRIO | ✓ Yes |
| Eichhorn | ✓ Yes |
| IKEA LILLABO | ✓ Yes |
| Hape | ✓ Yes |
| Lidl Playtive | ✓ Yes |
| Magic Bahn | ✓ Yes |
| Melissa & Doug | ✓ Yes (international sets) |
Not compatible: Plastic railway systems with a different track gauge or very cheap unbranded tracks that do not follow the standard. If in doubt, measure the track gauge – it must be 4,5 cm.
What can you build?
Combining wooden railways and Duplo opens up entirely new play scenarios:
Elevated railway
The train runs on Duplo pillars – ideal for a city scene with Duplo houses on either side.
Spiral viaduct
With curved adapters and gradually taller towers, the track spirals upwards.
Construction site
A Duplo crane lifts cargo onto wooden railway carriages – combining both worlds in imaginative play.
Bridge & tunnel
The train passes through a wooden tunnel, then over a Duplo bridge – for maximum variety in your layout.
You can find suitable tunnels, bridges and other accessories directly at Magic Bahn.
⚠ Safety: what to keep in mind
- BPA-free and tested for harmful substances under the EU Toy Safety Directive (EN 71)
- CE marking – tested product safety
- Suitable from 3 years (the standard starting age for combining wooden railways and Duplo)
- Small parts: children under 3 years should always be supervised during play
Frequently asked questions
Is IKEA’s wooden railway compatible with BRIO? +
Yes. IKEA LILLABO uses the same track gauge (4,5 cm) as BRIO. Tracks from both brands connect directly to each other – including via Duplo connectors.
Is BRIO compatible with Duplo? +
Not directly. But a Duplo connector for wooden railways lets you connect Duplo bricks as bridge supports to BRIO tracks – creating a stable and secure connection.
Which brands are compatible with BRIO? +
All wooden railways with a 4,5 cm track gauge – including Eichhorn, IKEA LILLABO, Hape, Lidl Playtive and Magic Bahn. Tracks from these brands connect directly to each other.
What age is this combination suitable for? +
From 3 years. Wooden railways are recommended from 3 years. The connectors are small parts – please always supervise play. The combination is not suitable for children under 3 years.
Can I connect curved tracks to Duplo? +
Yes – with the curved adapter. Browse our Duplo connector collection to find the right type for curved tracks.
How stable is the connection? +
Stable enough for normal children’s play. For tall structures (more than 6 Duplo bricks), we recommend a Duplo baseplate as a foundation to prevent the pillars from tipping over.
