Wooden train advent calendar: store-bought or DIY?
A DIY calendar makes the most sense if your child already has a wooden train. You pick the pieces yourself and match the contents, age level and budget to your family. Ready-made train advent calendars show up every season at toy stores and big retailers. If you buy one, check whether the contents and age rating fit your child.
| Store-bought | DIY | |
|---|---|---|
| Prep | none | about one evening |
| Contents | set by the manufacturer | you choose the pieces and activities |
| Cost | fixed price | your budget, starting at €0 |
| Age rating | one rating for the whole calendar | check each piece separately |
How the layout grows, step by step
You already have the tracks. Between December 1 and Christmas Eve, that simple track turns into a small train world. Some days add a play piece, like a bridge, a station or a battery-powered engine. Other days bring an activity that uses what you already have and costs nothing. You won't need any new track for this plan.
The plan has four stages:
- Days 1–6: The starter loop. Your existing tracks become a circle, then a longer oval if you have enough pieces. A gas station and a tunnel join in.
- Days 7–12: Scenery and a railroad crossing. The track gets a landscape, a bridge and a crossing gate.
- Days 13–17: Station and traffic. A station, a traffic light, a train schedule and passengers arrive.
- Days 18–24: The finale. An electric engine, an engine shed, a test run and the first big ride.
On December 1, there's a simple circle of track on the floor. By December 24, it has a gas station, tunnel, bridge, crossing gate, traffic light, station and engine shed, and an engine that runs on its own.
The 24-day plan: building a train world by Christmas
The tables show what's behind each door and how the layout changes. Item means a product with its own price. Activity means a free play idea. For age, we list three things:
- Product: the manufacturer's age rating on the product page and packaging.
- Activity: our suggestion for the play idea. Adjust it to your child.
- Supervision: whether an adult should be there.
🚂 Days 1–6: The starter loop
| Day | Item or activity | Behind the door | What changes | Age & supervision | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | ✏️ Activity | "Build the starter loop" | Your existing tracks become a closed circle. It's the starting point for everything that follows. | Activity: about 3+ · Supervision: yes, help with the setup | €0 |
| 2 | 🎁 Item | Gas Station with Fuel Pump | A gas station now stands next to the loop. From today on, the engine "fills up" every morning before it leaves. | Product: ages 2+, with adult supervision | €12.95 |

| 5 | ✏️ Activity | "Fuel delivery" | A train car carries a building block "fuel can" once around the track to the gas station. | Activity: about 3+ | €0 |

| Day | Item or activity | Behind the door | What changes | Age & supervision | Cost |

| 19 | 🎁 Item | Engine Shed with Helipad | The engine gets a shed for the night, with a helicopter landing pad on the roof. | Product: ages 2+, with adult supervision | €12.95 |
| 20 | ✏️ Activity ➕ optional item | "Freight train" Optional for DUPLO® families: Bridge Supports (10 pieces) |

| 23 | ✏️ Activity | "Test run" | Run the whole track once. Are all the connections tight? Is anything in the way that someone could trip over? If something's off: help with common problems. | Activity: about 3+ · Supervision: yes | €0 |
| 24 | ✏️ Activity ➕ optional item | Finale: Option B (free) or Option A (second train) | The first big ride through the finished train world, with the tickets from Day 3. Details in the next section. | Activity: about 3+ · Optional product: ages 3+ | €0 · optional €12.95–15.95 (not in the full plan) |
The pieces are suggestions from our shop. You can swap any of them for something you already have or buy elsewhere.
December 24: the big finale
On the last day, the train world is complete, and the engine has been running on its own since Day 18. Now it's time for the first big ride. There are two ways to do it.
Option B: the first ride with the whole family (free)
The last door holds an invitation: "The Christmas train leaves today." Everyone shows their ticket from Day 3, and your child is on duty with the engineer's license from Day 21. The engine makes one lap past every stop on the line.
Got room by the Christmas tree? Move the final loop so it runs around the base of the tree. On a flat floor, the wooden tracks work just like a classic train under the tree, and the battery-powered engine does the laps by itself. Keep tracks away from tree lights and cords.
Option A: a city transit line with a second train (optional)
If you'd like to give one more gift on the 24th, a second electric train can turn the track into a little city transit line. The station, gas station and engine shed become stops, and the schedule from Day 14 becomes the route map. This second train is an extra purchase and isn't included in the full plan.
- Electric Subway Train, 3 pieces (€12.95)
- Electric Streetcar with Figures (€15.95)
Two trains on one track? Let them take turns. While the transit train does its lap, the engine waits in the shed. That way the trains don't crash, and your child gets to be the dispatcher.

How much does a DIY wooden train advent calendar cost?
It depends on how many days you fill with a piece. All amounts cover the pieces described here, not including shipping and batteries (prices as of Nov 6, 2026).
| Version | What's included | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| No purchase | Tracks, train and wrapping you already have; every day is an activity; finale Option B | €0 |
| Budget | Days 6, 13 and 18 (sound tunnel, station, electric engine); all other days are activities | €38.85 |
| Full plan | All 8 pieces from the tables, finale Option B | €103.60 |
| Full plan + transit line | Full plan plus the electric subway train (finale Option A) | €116.55 |
Choosing the streetcar instead of the subway train adds €3.
What age is this advent calendar for?
There's no single age rating for the whole calendar. Check the manufacturer's age rating on each product page and package. In this plan, the electric pieces (engine, sound tunnel and traffic light) are for ages 3 and up. The other wooden pieces are for ages 2 and up with adult supervision.
The ages for the activities are our suggestions. Most of the play ideas work from about age three. You know your child best, so simplify or skip activities as needed. For toddlers, fill more days with simple activities, like "push the train through the tunnel," and save pieces with small parts until your child is old enough.
Tips: wrapping, siblings and starting late
Wrapping
Small fabric bags or paper bags can be reused year after year. Activities fit on a postcard-size card. Write the activity in a few words and add a drawing, so kids who can't read yet understand it too.
Siblings
Two kids can build one shared train world and take turns opening the doors. Or give each child their own color for their activity cards.
If something's off
When you rebuild and extend the track, things don't always run smoothly. We have guides for the most common issues:
- 🚂 Engine stuck in the tunnel? → Why does the engine get stuck in the tunnel?
- 🔗 Cars coming apart on the bridge? → Train cars uncoupling on a slope
- ⚠️ Train keeps jumping the track? → Wooden train keeps derailing?
Starting late
Starting after December 1? On the first day, your child opens all the activities up to that date and picks two. You can combine the days with pieces.
