The starter pack has been under the Christmas tree for three weeks, and already you can tell: the track is finished after five minutes, the train circles its loop, and the child looks up at you: "More?"
We know that moment. We've been building wooden train layouts with our child for years and have tried a lot of wooden train accessories along the way, from simple circles to multi-level routes with ramps, tunnels and bridges. Some pieces are in daily use today. Others we put in the bin after two attempts and never took out again. In this article we'll show you exactly what's really worth it, and what you can safely skip on your next shopping trip.
One thing up front: this isn't about buying as much as possible. Quite the opposite. With the right five accessories you can do far more than with twenty half-baked add-ons. The key is understanding which pieces truly open up the layout, and which just take up space.
The 5 accessories we use constantly
These five pieces are part of almost every build we do. Not because someone recommended them to us, but because without them we kept running into the same limits.
1. Stackable bridge piers
If we had to recommend a single accessory, this would be it. Stackable bridge piers are the basis for any layout meant to go beyond a flat racetrack. The moment height comes into play, and every child wants that eventually, you need them.

Our most important lesson here: only ever buy one single kind. We tried it the other way and regretted it. Our first multi-level build collapsed twice because we'd mixed different pier types. Different contact surfaces and heights lead to wobbly joints. Buy a consistent type and you can stack as high as you like, with no stability problems, no rebuilding, no frustration.
Another tip from experience: with long tracks that hang free in the air, always add an extra pier in the middle as support. A track that rests on both ends but sags in the middle jams the train, especially a heavy freight train with several cars.

2. Large curved tracks
Curved tracks come in two versions: large arc and small arc. Both have their place, but if we had to choose, we always take the large arc.
The reason is simple: the wider arc keeps trains from flying off the curve. Sounds trivial, but with heavy cars or trains pulling a trailer it's a real difference. After a heavy freight train kept jumping off the small arc, we replaced that section with large curved tracks, and since then it practically never happens. The small arc is tighter and therefore more error-prone once the layout gets a bit more complex.
As for the math: eight large curved tracks make a full circle, four a half circle, two a quarter. That allows very flexible routing. One detail that's proven very useful in practice: two small curved tracks have the same length and radius as one ascending curved track. That makes for climbs that fold seamlessly into a circle, with no special pieces to buy.
Combine both large and small arcs and you can build 180-degree turns or create irregular circle shapes. That greatly increases your creative freedom.
A word on track lengths: Magic Bahn straight tracks come in six lengths, 5.1 / 7.5 / 9 / 10.8 / 14.5 and 20.6 cm. That variety sounds confusing at first but makes a big difference in practice. Map out the footprint with the longest straights and use the shorter ones to fine-tune and close gaps, and you save yourself a rebuild when the track suddenly ends in mid-air. On your first larger build especially, this tip is worth its weight in gold.

3. Plastic incline tracks
Here's our most honest recommendation: buy more incline tracks than you first think. Almost every layout with a change in height needs at least two, and most of the time it ends up being four or more.
Why plastic and not wood? We tested both: the smooth surface of the plastic ramp slows the train in a controlled way, both uphill and downhill. A wooden ramp lets heavy trains roll too fast, and going downhill that regularly causes derailments at the bottom of the ramp. You notice the difference by the second afternoon of play at the latest. For us, choosing plastic wasn't about the material but about the way it drives.
It's also handy that our incline track is the same length as the longest straight. That makes it especially easy to fit into existing routes.
Ramps matter most for electric trains. If you want a battery-operated train to climb inclines on its own, you need an even, smooth ramp surface.
4. Small connector pieces
This is the most underrated accessory type, and the one most missed when it's not there. We ignored it for a long time and then kicked ourselves. At one point we thought our tunnel was broken, when really all that was missing was a small connector at each end.
The problem: many accessory pieces, such as tunnels, stations, bridges and switches, have a socket connection instead of the usual peg on one or both sides. If you then try to attach a normal track, you're stuck. The small connector solves exactly this problem: it joins two peg ends together.
It also comes as a double-peg version. This is sturdier than a short track plus connector and turns out to be useful far more often than you'd first think.
Especially versatile, too, is the flexible plastic bending connector: it has a certain stiffness but can be set to different angles. Ideal for uneven surfaces, or when you need to close a gap for which no track fits exactly. Anyone building complex layouts will quickly come to value it.
5. DUPLO adapter
Our personal favorite, and the accessory that prompts the most questions from other parents when we show it on the layout.

That might sound like a gimmick at first, but in practice it opens up surprisingly many options. Accessories we wouldn't buy again today
Honesty is part of the deal. These three accessories disappointed us, not because they're badly made in principle, but because the limitations in everyday play are too big. Maybe this list will save you an unnecessary purchase.
Sprung curved tracks
The problem is right there in the name: the strong built-in tension of the spring pulls the neighboring tracks apart as you fit it. Gaps open up, connections loosen, and the train derails where you'd least expect it. After several attempts we took the sprung curved tracks out of the layout and haven't used them since.
Maybe they work better in very stable, large layouts; with us they caused more problems than they solved.
Chain-link curved tracks
The flexibility sounds tempting, and on a flat floor with an uneven surface underneath it does work well. Chain-link curved tracks adapt to any bump in the floor and can close gaps that no rigid track fits.
The deciding problem: chain-link curved tracks have no stiffness and therefore can't be used on bridge piers. Anyone who wants to build multi-level simply can't use them. Since multi-level layouts are the standard for us, they barely get used anymore.
Simple switches without a setting mechanism
Switches make a layout look more interesting and, in theory, open up new routes. The problem with simple switches: they let the train decide which way it goes. That's rarely predictable, and it quickly frustrates children when the train keeps going the "wrong" way.
If you want to use switches, go straight for versions with a manual setting mechanism. These always come in pairs (left + right), can be set deliberately, and give you back control over the direction. Important to know: switches of any kind work only on the ground, not on bridge piers.
Which accessories for which age?
Not every accessory suits every age equally. Pieces that are too complex overwhelm little children; ones that are too simple bore older ones. Here's what years of building together have taught us:
Ages 2–3: just connect, push the train, have fun
At this age it's mainly about pushing, connecting and discovering. Fine motor skills are still developing, so complex connections quickly overwhelm and lead to frustration rather than fun.

Good fit: long straights, large curved tracks, simple tunnels and flat bridges with no changes in height. At this age sturdy tracks matter more than lots of special pieces. Children often rebuild, tug at the track or keep reconnecting the pieces.
Our own experience: before this, our child mostly watched or connected individual tracks. From around 2.5 years, they began bringing their own ideas and placing bridges deliberately, and from that point building together gets really fun.
Ages 4–5: height, speed, the first complexity
Now it gets interesting. Children this age want height, speed and variety. The layout can get more complex, and the child wants to take an active part in building, not just watch.
Good fit: stackable bridge piers, plastic incline tracks, small connector pieces. The first switches with a setting mechanism work well, because the child can decide which way the train goes. Electric trains get exciting at this age, since a train that drives itself has a fascination all its own.
Anyone starting with wooden train accessories at this age hits exactly the right moment: the child can shape the layout actively and develops real building plans.
Age 6 and up: own ideas, complex layouts
From this age, children plan actively. They want to bring their own routing ideas to life, experiment with heights and crossings, and design layouts that allow several play scenarios at once.

Good fit: the whole range. DUPLO adapters for creative structures, crossings for multi-track layouts, complex multi-level builds. Electric trains become especially interesting now, because the child grasps the layout as a system, not just a racetrack.

Which wooden train expansion is worth it first?
That's the question parents ask us most often. My honest answer: don't buy everything at once. Starting with a starter pack and adding targeted expansions gets you much further than one big bulk purchase.
If we were starting over today, this would be our order:
- Stackable bridge piers, without them every layout stays flat
- Plastic incline tracks, only then does height really make sense
- Large curved tracks, steadier curves you feel right away
- Small connector pieces, essential as soon as tunnels or stations join in
- DUPLO adapter, an instant win if you already have DUPLO
The reason for this order: each step opens up the next. With bridge piers but no ramps, you can't get up high. With ramps but no steady curves, you derail along the way. The logic carries through all the way, and that's the difference between a layout that works and one that frustrates.

Expanding the wooden train sensibly doesn't take a huge budget. With these five accessory types you can turn any starter pack into a far more interesting layout: multi-level, with climbs and descents, and flexible enough for a hundred different routing ideas.
